What our experience was like in San Miguel de Allende

We rolled into San Miguel de Allende in our truck camper while driving the Pan American Highway excited to experience this town we had heard so much about. While in town we decided to book a hotel as a break from the truck camper and to get to experience the hotel side of this incredible city.

San Miguel de Allende is known to many domestic and international travelers as a vacation destination so we decided the best way to experience it would be to make it a mini vacation for ourselves as well. (And we were really looking forward to having air conditioning for a while!) Famous for its art scene, beautiful preserved streets and architecture, warm climate, natural hot springs, and delicious wines, San Miguel de Allende is the perfect place to unwind and relax for a few days.

As a whole, our time in San Miguel de Allende was wonderful! We thoroughly enjoyed the food, architecture, culture, and our hotel which was the perfect place to kick back by the pool and relax for a few days (more on this a bit later in this post). Like all destinations, there were things about this town that we didn't love, but nothing to write home about. The very few minor negatives that we experienced are listed in the next section below, so keep reading...

Things we wish we knew before we visited

  1. San Miguel de Allende is expensive! Okay, I knew it was likely to be pricer than a lot of Mexico, but the prices were comparable to most mid size cities in the USA which is definitely pricey for Mexico. A lot of folks visit Mexico hoping to make their dollar go really far, but honestly, it won't go nearly as far in San Miguel de Allende as it will in places like Bacalar or Guanajuato.
  2. The streets in San Miguel de Allende are not fun to walk. This one really surprised us because this city is famous for its charming streets lined with colorful buildings. However, the streets are really, really busy. While I love that the busy streets are evidence that San Miguel de Allende isn't just tourists, the streets are not enjoyable to stroll down. The streets are mostly full of locals rushing off to work and school by motorcycle, car, and bus. Because the streets are so old and narrow (a.k.a. charming), there's very little room to avoid the engine noises whirling by. The sidewalks on either side of the streets are very narrow and just wide enough for one person to walk. When we'd go out walking to find coffee or dinner we'd have to walk single file, even our dog Kramer had to walk behind me because there wasn't room for his 30 pound self next to me on the sidewalk. Talking while walking was next to impossible and the noise just took away from the ambiance.
  3. San Miguel de Allende is not safe for the physically impaired. I don't want to say that there's nothing to do in San Miguel if you're someone who struggles with walking, stability, or requires a wheelchair. Our hotel appeared to be fully accessible for those with limited physical capabilities, but aside from that, the city is dangerous to those that are a fall risk or rely on a chair to get around. Remember those charming cobblestone streets I was talking about? They're everywhere and the sidewalks are narrow and uneven making them a hazard to even the most physically able. I understand that these are things to come with traveling to historic towns around the world, but I thought it was worth mentioning in case we have any folks out here who have to take these sorts of things into consideration.
  4. San Miguel de Allende is HOT. I know, Mexico is known for heat, but San Miguel de Allende was even hotter than we expected. Granted, we visited in one of the two hottest months of the year (May), but I was surprised by how hot it was for being tucked away so far up in the mountains. This brings me to my next point...
  5. San Miguel de Allende sits high above sea level. For those of you who are from Colorado or any other place where you're already acclimated to the altitude, you can just skip this part. But for those of you like ourselves who live at sea level, San Miguel de Allende's resting altitude at 6,200 feet will make you feel a bit more winded when out and about exploring or exercising. Be careful to be gracious with yourself as you're adjusting to both the heat and the altitude!

How to get around San Miguel de Allende

The city of San Miguel de Allende is relatively small. Think of it more of a town and less of a city. Most places you want to get in town can be reached by walking assuming you choose a hotel that is close to the heart of the city (all of our hotel recommendations are in walking distance to the best spots in town). Walking is the best way to get around town but do know that the sidewalks are narrow and the streets are busy with the exception of a few blocks surrounding the cathedral that are close to pedestrians only.

In the chance you would rather drive than walk, taxis are widely available throughout the city and rides are generally very inexpensive. A typical ride from hotel to the center of town will cost around $2-5 USD. While San Miguel de Allende is a very safe town, we'd always recommend taking a taxi late at night to avoid unnecessary trouble.

Public buses are available but we never tested out the system ourselves to give you more information about how that works. Honestly, I don't think you'll need to use a bus in San Miguel de Allende unless you were wanting an adventure and/or are looking to get farther outside of town. It's used almost exclusively by locals getting to and from work so we never felt the need to hop on.

Live Aqua Hotel

When we visited San Miguel de Allende, we chose the beautiful Live Aqua Urban Resort as our home away from home. This luxurious hotel seamlessly blends modern amenities with the historic charm that San Miguel de Allende is renowned for. Nestled in the heart of the city, Live Aqua offers guests an unparalleled experience of sophistication and relaxation. From its elegantly decorated rooms that offer breathtaking views of the city to its world-class spa services, every detail is designed to pamper and delight. Whether you're exploring the vibrant streets of San Miguel or looking to rest and relax by the pool or in the spa, the hotel is the perfect hotel in San Miguel de Allende.

We chose this hotel because it's dog friendly and was on the edge of town making it both walkable to everything we wanted to see and do while allowing for a quieter environment than some of the other hotels in town which were surrounded by bustling streets. The pool and other outdoor spaces were spacious and quiet which was exactly what we were looking for.

Note: If you're visiting San Miguel de Allende but aren't quite ready to splurge on a five star hotel, do know that Live Aqua offers a day pass to their pool. For $1500 pesos a person you can enjoy some of what makes this hotel special. While $1500 pesos per person is steep (in our opinions), do note that $1000 of that goes towards food and beverage at the poolside restaurant and bar. When you look at it like that it's not too bad a deal! I'd recommend making a day of it to get your money's worth.

The Rosewood Hotel in San Miguel de Allende stands out not only for its exceptional service and luxurious accommodations but also for its stunning vistas and pet-friendly policy. Pets are welcomed with open arms, making it an ideal choice for travelers who don't want to leave their furry friends behind. What sets the Rosewood apart is its rooftop restaurant and bar, which offers some of the most breathtaking views of the city. From this vantage point, guests can gaze out over the historic heart of San Miguel de Allende, taking in its colorful facades and the rolling hills beyond. The atmosphere here, especially at sunset, is truly magical, with the sky painting a backdrop that enhances the gourmet dining experience. When we were booking our stay in San Miguel it came down to The Rosewood and Live Aqua. We ended up at Live Aqua because of its pool and quieter setting, but The Rosewood was super appealing and stood out as an incredible option in the city.

Note: Even if you aren't staying at The Rosewood Hotel you can still book reservations for their bar and restaurants. We'd recommend booking a spot at their rooftop restaurant, Luna Tapas Bar, for sunset. You'll get to witness one of the most magical views in Mexico while sipping on craft cocktails.
