A film about one Cornish campsite reached 105,668 people, and 89% of them were in the UK.
The Caravan and Motorhome Club has been part of British life since 1907. Nearly 180,000 people follow them on Facebook, and their members are some of the most loyal travelers in the country.
Something was shifting, though. Roof tents were bringing in a younger crowd, average age 32. Van conversions were doing the same. A new generation was discovering the same thing Club members have known for a century, and they were finding it on video.
Southwest England was the Club's priority region for the year. They wanted people to see Cornwall, not read about it.
So they made a call that most heritage brands take years to make. They put budget behind a long form YouTube film and gave it room to breathe. Eighteen minutes, one campsite, no rush.
An American channel making a film about a British campsite raises a fair question. Who actually watches it?
YouTube surfaces travel content to people near the place on screen. So a film about Cornwall found Cornwall. 89.1% of the audience was in the United Kingdom. The United States accounted for 3.8%.
Top geographies, lifetime. United Kingdom 89.1%.
Age split, lifetime. 83.9% of viewers were 45 or older.
The age split landed in the same place. 36.8% were 65 and over. Another 29.5% were 55 to 64. Nearly 84% of everyone who watched was 45 or older, which is close to a mirror of the Club's own membership.
And it wasn't our existing audience being shown the Club a second time. Only 2.8% of search traffic came from people looking for our names. A quarter of it came from people typing "cornwall."
The Club wanted British travelers thinking about Cornwall. That is exactly who showed up.
1.6M impressions to 7:23 watched Almost all of it served by YouTube itself, not paid for and not pushed.
People searched for Cornwall Not for us. A quarter of search traffic came from the destination itself.
The film didn't spike and disappear. It settled into YouTube's suggested feed and kept working, which means it is still finding new people to send to Cornwall today.
We drove the Land Cruiser down to Merrose St Mawes Club Campsite and filmed for three days. It rained for most of it, which is honestly the most British thing that could have happened. We kept it in.
Thank you so much for such a fantastic video, myself and Paul both loved it.
